Interested in licensing but not sure where to start?

Let’s explore the options.

Types of licensing I offer:

Exclusive license

An exclusive license gives you the rights to use a specific design for a particular product or product category—for a set period, usually 1 to 2 years. This means the design will not be licensed to anyone else within your market space during that time. For example, if you’ve licensed a design exclusively for use on women’s apparel, I may still license that same design for a different category like home décor or stationery.

You’ll have exclusive use within your defined scope, while I retain ownership and full copyright over the design and any similar or imitative works used outside of your licensed category.

At the end of the license period, you’ll have the option to renew. If not renewed, usage rights return to me and the design may be made available to others.

Exclusive licenses are an excellent option for brands seeking something distinctive within their niche.

Non-exclusive license

A non-exclusive license allows multiple clients to use the same design across various applications. This option is often more affordable and flexible, making it an ideal choice for small businesses, boutique makers, or clients who don’t require exclusivity but still want access to unique, original patterns.

If the new design is commissioned (custom-created), a design fee may also apply. However, for non-exclusive arrangements that align closely with my style, I’m often happy to waive that cost.

Buyouts

I don’t offer full buyouts, which would transfer complete ownership and all rights of a design to the client. Under a buyout, the design would no longer be available for anyone else to use or license. Instead, I work with licensing models that allow the design to retain its versatility and value—while still giving you the access and usage rights that suit your needs.

Hybrid options

You can also consider a hybrid option. For instance, you might license a design on a non-exclusive basis but in a colorway created exclusively for your brand. That way, it still feels like you, but it’s more affordable and accessible.

Pricing Models

When licensing designs, compensation can take the form of a flat fee, royalties, or a combination of both.

A Flat fee

It is a single payment that covers the agreed usage outlined in the agreement. It’s simple, clear and predictable for both parties.

Royalties

Ongoing payments where I receive a small percentage of product sales featuring the design. Lower upfront cost, it scales with your business—if you're just starting out, it’s often more accessible.

Hybrid

A mix of flat fee and royalties offers a balanced way to share both the cost and the value of the design.

I’m open to both models—and happy to discuss a hybrid approach if that better suits your brand or project needs.
